In this documentary for the BBC's Horizon programme, Sir Paul Nurse, the head of the Royal Society (the world's oldest scientific institution) explores his perception that the public is losing faith in science and science communication.
He looks at how poor reporting of science in the media can distort public understanding and meets a HIV positive man who does not believe that the virus is the cause of AIDS. A common theme is how people are able to reach unshakable beliefs regardless of evidence or scientific consensus.
His conclusion is that today it is common for people to choose their point of view and then cherry pick data that corresponds to it.
